Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor used both for hair loss prevention and as a supplemental anti-androgen in some feminizing hormone therapy protocols. It reduces DHT (dihydrotestosterone) levels, the androgen primarily responsible for male-pattern hair loss.
